FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is Membership required?
Membership is not required to apply, register, or attend the camps and classes of The Incredible Medical School.  Members of The Incredible Medical School do not pay a registration fee or deposit for any camp or class applications.  See  Membership  for more information.

Why is there a registration fee?
The registration fee helps to cover the administrative costs of setting up each camp or class.  More importantly, the registration fee keeps our camp and class costs under control because only those students seriously considering attending are submitting applications. The registration fee reduces almost to zero the number of frivolous or fraudulent applications.

Why isn't there a registration fee for members?
One of the benefits of membership is the absence of a registration fee.  Members have paid a membership fee and this indicates their level of interest and involvement with The Incredible Medical School.  Administrative cost of camp or class applications for members is much less than the cost of applications from non members.

How is The Incredible Medical School different from a "mini med school"?
The Incredible Medical School, after presenting the basic science information needed, focuses more on medical procedures and skills in the camps.  The "special class" sessions provide a more in-depth basic science background prior to diagnostic test and procedures in that clinical area.  Many of the procedure skills we teach are the same procedure skills physicians learn as interns and residents after medical school.  See General Information for contents of our camps and classes.  See Mega Medical Class for information on our month long mega classes.

The Incredible Medical School is not the same as the usual "Mini Med School".   Most "Mini Med Schools" meet for 2 or 3 hours a night once a week for several weeks.  They are designed to enhance you knowledge of medicine, illnesses, and health.  There is typically a clinical lecture series plus basic science as it relates to medicine that meets once a week and provide students information on some of the same subjects studies by real medical students.  Some mini med schools augment the lectures with laboratory tours, hands-on demonstrations, videos, and more.  Example topics are cell biology, biochemistry, cell metabolism, molecular biology, genetic engineering, immunology, virology, neurosciences, endocrinology, oncology, anatomy physiology, and cancer.

In some "Med Camps", students observe nurses on their daily activities, observing nursing tasks and interacting with patients through various volunteer duties.  Students spend a day with a nurse in various units of the hospital – emergency dept, obstetrics , orthopedic, geriatric, pediatric, surgery, family practice, and cardiology.  Students may also have daily sessions in such things as vital signs, wheelchair safety, and concepts such as CPR.

Why are there no dates or cities listed for every class?
Generally, the special classes are scheduled for nonmembers only as available student spaces are filled.  Each class requires 30 students.  Members receive email notification of special classes that are scheduled in advance for members.  These class dates are listed on the web site only if there is space available for nonmembers.  Classes are currently scheduled only in the state of Texas.  Specific Inquires are welcomed from other states - particularly Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma.  Extension to other states are anticipated within the next year.  At the time of registering for a class, you indicate the city or cities in which you are willing to attend the class.  When the class is filled, you will be notified of the city and date for your class.

Is the camp only a day camp, or do you also have overnight camps?
Our camps are held only during the day.  Students attending a camp from a distant city will need to arrange their own overnight accommodations.

Will students observe or treat actual patients?
No.  Laws, rules and regulations prevent the general public  from viewing doctor - patient interactions or treatments.  We have occasional actor patients in specific classes.  Our anatomical and training models are top of the line and are the same training aids used by medical schools, hospitals, doctors, emergency techs, and paramedics.

Are the age group listings strict?
Exceptions are rare as we try to strictly adhere to age groups.  If you think that an exception is appropriate, discuss this with us prior to registering.  Due to type of medical procedure skills teaching, such as dissections, and viewing of injuries in videos or models, we encourage you to discuss this with your child before registering.  Try to make sure prior to registering that your child can handle such information and visuals.  If a student is not able to continue in the camp or class because of an inability to handle the topics or procedures, we are unable to refund payments.

What time can children arrive at the camp and what is the pick up time?
You may bring your child to the camp no earlier than 15 minutes before the camp or class begins and pick up your child no later than 15 minutes after the camp or class ends.  We require that you physically escort your minor child to and from the class or camp room and sign them in and out.

Are meals provided by the camp or class?
No, we do not provide any meals.  A snack lunch that does not require refrigeration or heating is recommended.  We cannot guarantee that the facilities will have a restaurant or cafeteria which would be available to the students or if there may be food establishments near the facilities.  However, if such eating facilities exist, they may be used for meals.

Are parents allowed to stay in the camp or class with the child?
Our camps and classes emphasize independent learning without the presence of parents.  We do understand the parent's desire to be present and sometimes this enhances the learning experience.  We therefore, on advance request, will allow visiting at some times during the learning experience.  Parents wishing to spend extended time with the child during the class or camp will also need to register for the camp or class.

What are the destinations of the field trips?
Due to the always changing schedule at medical facilities and staff availability at medical facilities, field trips may change at any time due to the facilities' status at the time of the field trip.  Therefore, the schedule and destinations of field trips can not be guaranteed.  All field trip schedules are viewed as preliminary.

Is there testing and grading at The Incredible Medical School?
No. We present the camps and classes as a fun learning experience without the pressure to take or pass tests.  However, arrangement can be made in advance with students to assess the student's performance with observations and questions during the camp or class.  If the student has an adequate command of the information and procedures, we will issue a certificate for the class or camp.  This certificate only indicates that The Incredible Medical School feels that the student has an adequate knowledge of the subject material.  The certificate does not indicate that any other organization, school, or person should or will accept the certificate as meeting their requirements.  The Incredible Medical School does not represent that any other organization, school, or  person will recognize or honor the certificate.  The current cost of such evaluation is $10 for members, $25 for non members and is payable in advance.  This fee is not refundable and is not based on a satisfactory evaluation which is required to receive the certificate.  The certificate application is included in all application form sets.

Are there any graduation diplomas or certificates?
Each student completing a class or camp will receive a "diploma".  This diploma only indicates satisfactory attendance and does not indicate any degree of knowledge.

Can I use the training and teachings of The Incredible Medical School to work in a clinic or doctor's office?
